INCREDIBLE EDIBLE ZOMBIE EYEBALLS

FOR YOUR HALLOWEEN & TRICK OR TREAT PARTY

HALLOWEEN is fast approaching and I thought I'd share this incredibly easy (queezy?) method for making super edible Zombie eyeballs for your little ghouls and ghosties to gobble up.
I originally posted this as a great way of making edible frog spawn for foggy themed parties. But so many friends said "Hey, you know what! These would look great at Halloween. So, if you simply swap the Lime jelly / jello for Blackcurrant, you'll have great looking, great tasting 
ZOMBIE EYEBALLS for your HALLOWEEN PARTY Here's how ...

Make your own incredible edible Zombie eyes! 

It looks amazing and tastes even better. You will need ...

Spherical ice cube tray

1 pack BLACKCURRANT flavoured jello (US) - jelly (UK)

handful of blueberries, measuring jug

stirring stick, refrigerator

Unwrap and prepare the Jello. I find it quicker and easier to snip the chunks into small pieces using scissors.
You can even afford it eat a bit as you do this! : )

As you can see my blueberries are frozen but don't have to be.

This next bit is important. Follow the instructions on your particular brand BUT you shouldn't use as much hot water as it suggests to melt the pieces. At least HALVE what it recommends and maybe even a bit less than that. You want the resulting Jello to come out of the mould stronger, more concentrated, and much firmer than normal.

A short blast in the microwave helps melt the pieces more quickly. Once mixed thoroughly and dissolved, pour your delicious smelling liquid blackcurrant Jello into the bottom half of your spherical mould, almost to the top. 

And then ..... wait!!!!! 

Yes, this is the boring bit, you need to let the mixture start to set before adding your blueberries.

The time will vary from brand to brand so just be patient.

Now comes the only tricky part. If your Jello has 'semi set' to just the right consistency it will be a thick liquid and a bit wobbly. You will be able to plop each blueberry into place smack in the middle of the circles. Sometimes they float out of position so wait until you've placed all of them and then using a cocktail stick, or similar, gently push them into place.

Once you're happy with their positions, drop the top half of the mould smartly on top and begin pressing down, forcing out the excess liquid Jello. Don't worry about making a mess you can lick (I mean clean) it up afterwards.

Pop it into the refrigerator for about an hour or more and then the best bit is opening up the moulds to reveal your perfect Jello spheres. With this particular mould I use a round knife tip to gently prise it apart.

If your Jello is just the right consistency you will be able to gently tease and ease the balls out of the lower half of the mould taking care not to rip off the top half.

These incredible edible Zombie eyes look great when served with ice cream, or make lots and simply pile them up in a great heap and let the party goers dig in. I've not yet tried it with blood red Raspberry sauce dribbled over the top but I bet that looks fantastically gory.

*Or for adults only - why not add a measure of your favourite spirit into the initial mix and serve in shot glasses!!??

• AMAZING MONA LISA FROG ILLUSION •

Try this amazing optical illusion!
Here's a great magic illusion featuring one of my favourite pieces of artwork - Mona Lisa Frog.
This works best on your tablet or PC. All you need do is firstly to click on this negative image to bring it into the picture viewer.
Now stare at Mona's face intently for 20 seconds (whilst having your mouse or finger hover over the 2nd small icon image below the negative picture).
After 20 seconds - keep looking in the same place - as you click on the 2nd small icon image.

As soon as you've clicked and switched to to the 2nd picture keep looking at that same spot and you'll see my Mona Lisa Frog artwork in full glorious colour. You'll notice it's surrounded by a golden gilt picture frame. 

OR SO YOU PERCEIVE! 

But in reality there is actually NO colour there at all! What?! 

You'll truly not believe your eyes.

So you'd better try and see for yourself.

Whilst in the picture viewer you'll be able to try it again and again by switching between the first 2 images as often as you like.

Mona Lisa Frog (or Frogga Lisa) is one of my favourite illustrations. It was created way before digital using water colours and coloured pencils, and some montage for the frame. It has been licensed and used on posters and postcard designs, mouse mats and T shirts and more.

I've now turned it into an unbelievable magical illusion.

This amazing illusion is part of my I LOVE FROGS resources.

It's the time of year when we start to see thousands of cute little Ladybirds around the garden. This is good news as there are millions of greenfly clouding the air and on just about every leaf in the garden. The Ladybirds will start to happily munch their way through these damaging aphid pests. If you've ever wondered what the various stages of the ladybird look like, well here you are.

Here are some facts about the Ladybird (Ladybug in America)

• October- February: Adult ladybirds will winter in a dormant state, known as overwintering.
• March- April: The adult ladybirds start to become active and leave the winter sites to find food, they love to feed on aphids (greenfly).
• May: The male and female ladybirds start to mate.
• June- July: Females will lay eggs which then hatch into 'larvae'. Larvae feed on aphids and then form 'pupae'.
• August: This new generation of adult ladybirds start to emerge from the pupae.
• September: The new adults feed but do not mate for the first year until the following spring after they have overwintered.

LADYBUG PARTY CARDS

Here's a great FREE card game for children's parties. It doesn't even have to be a Ladybug themed party either, but perfect if it is.

This is based on the simple 'match the animals' card games where there are pairs of animals to match up. Slightly more tricky and much more fun this time because kids need to match up the SPOTS on these attractive pairs of Ladybugs.

I've specially illustrated 12 pairs of Ladybugs / Ladybirds. Start by downloading and printing out these 4 sheets of ladybug artwork cards preferably onto to thin card.

*TOP TIP

Each sheet is approx. A5 and when trimmed out each ladybug card will measure 68 x 73mm

If you want larger cards then print each sheet out at A4 size and then the cards will be 94 x 100mm

And if you would like a GIANT set of the cards if your party is outdoors for example, or in a really LARGE party room (or stuck on the wall etc) I'm also providing 12 individual cards that can be printed at A4 size each.

That will make a REALLY impressive GIANT party game where the kids can run around having fun amongst the cards.

(download them individually, works best. And remember to print each card twice).

Once printed, trim out the cards and shuffle and mix them well. Lay them out face down on a flat surface.

*TOP TIP - It looks really attractive if you can stick some patterned card onto the backs. 

The first child (or first team member) comes forward and turns any TWO cards over. If the spots match on both cards there's a loud cheer and they get to keep those 2 cards.

If the spots DON'T match (as in the example above), ask them to turn the cards back over, face down, return to their seat whilst everyone else should try and remember which spots they were and where they were placed.

As each child comes out in turn the cards will start to go down in number as they become more successful at guessing and remembering where the cards with matching spots are.

When all cards have been matched and taken the winner is the person, or the team, with the most cards.

It's that time of year again when the passionate croaking of the frogs seems to herald in the welcome springtime, and then before you know it, snow has returned and the frogspawn is encased and jewelled in ice!

Here's a photo of a new batch of frogspawn clumps found in my own pond a few days ago. To celebrate this I've illustrated a brand new graphic showing the life cycle of the common frog.

And, I'm making it available FREE here as a downloadable colouring in poster. 

So please feel free to grab yourself copies for home or the classroom and start colouring and learning all about the remarkable journey that the little frogs go through to reach adulthood. Only around two in every one thousand eggs will actually make it to a one year old froglet!
